This work is inspired by my recent return to classical art theory and my intuitive use of oils as a medium to explore themes of femininity, fertility, and safety. The viewer may first be struck by the direct gaze of the mother, then find comfort in the sense of protection offered to the sleeping child. Beyond this, the meaning is left open to individual interpretation.
